Off Beat

This is a schedule of upcoming one-off club rides put together for your riding pleasure. They range from easy to advance so there is something for everyone.

Sat August 19 – Hunua Trails Advanced

These trails are actually riding really well in the middle of winter and we have heard that vegetation has been trimmed back on some of the trails, so let’s go check it out. This will also be a perfect opportunity to look at what trail work needs to be done at the next Hunua Trail Dig Day on September 10th.

We will be riding for approximately 2.5h but there are options to return early.

Ride starts at 8:30am from the car park at the bottom of Mangatawhiri Dam, Directions from Auckland. Take the Moumoukai Road approximately 6km past Hunua township. Climb via gravel road past the Waiora Dam turnoff and then drop down to Mangatawhiri Dam. Park up in the campground carpark at the foot of the dam – then you can clean your bike at the bikewash provided by ARC Hunua.

January 26th – Whitford

Advanced

It’s been a few years since we ran a club ride at Whitford. We understand the trail pixies have been hard at work adding more flow to the notoriously technical trails so it will be interesting to see what’s changed.

When: Meet at 8:45am, ride starts at 9am.
Directions: Meet at Waikopua Rd, just after the kennels. Drive out through Whitford Village. Turn right on to Waikopua Rd after about five minutes.
Ride Leader: Nick Reeves

March 1st/2nd – Riverhead Weekend – Old School vs Nu Skool!

Advanced

Old school or nu skool – what’s your preference? Rocks & roots or berms and jumps? Slow & technical or fast & flowing? Wheels on the ground or off of it? All of the above?

We’re going to sample all the delights that Riverhead forest has to offer this weekend with a ride from Barlow Road on the Saturday and at the WCRC compound on the Sunday. Come along to one or both!

Saturday:

Where: Barlow Road (directions)
When: Meet on Saturday 1st March at 8:45am, ride starts at 9am. This could be a long ride so bring enough food and drink for four to five hours of riding, although there will be bailout points if you need to get away early.
Ride Leader: Edd Ballinger

Sunday CANCELLED

If you still want to ride, join us out at Waitawa for a ride and working bee on Auckland’s newest trails.

Where: WCRC Compound, Old North Road (directions)
When: Meet on Sunday 2nd March at 8:45am, ride starts at 9am. Expect to be done by midday.
Ride Leader: Marke Jennings-Temple

March 22nd – Riverhead South

Advanced

Following the success of our recent Riverhead ride (and while the forest is still nice and dry) we’re going back to check out some different trails to the south of Barlow Road. This ride will be lead by Mark Wilson (you may have met him at the previous ride) who, thanks to his involvement with NW Orienteering, knows the forest like the back of his hand.

Saturday:

Where: Barlow Road (directions)
When: Meet at 8:45am, ride starts at 9am.
Ride Leader: Mark Wilson

April 17th – 21st Great Barrier Island

Advanced

Grab your bike – we are escaping to Great Barrier Island for the long weekend. Places are limited and we need to know numbers asap so that we can arrange ferry bookings and accommodation.

Ride Day 1 will be around 5 5km and Day 2 ride around 35km so a good level of fitness required. Trails will be a mix of gravel and forest road with some single track.

We will be staying around Medlands Beach so you can swim, fish and go for sunset beach walks with your biker buddies 🙂

Details:

Depart AKL Thursday 17 April 6.00pm from city
Return Monday 21 April from Tryphena 4.30pm or 1:30pm

Cost will be around $158 return for ferry and approximately $50 per night for accommodation. You will need to bring your own food.

Email teamrides@aucklandmtb.co.nz ASAP for to confirm your spot.

Ride Leader: Simon Yates

May 18th – Slater Road

Intermediate

Slater Road is a private forest usually used by the club as one of the venues for our race series. Pine forest on undulating terrain, it’s absolutely riddled with primo singletrack. Owner Rob Garden will be setting up a course and showing us round his back yard.

Meet at 8:45am, ride starts at 9am.

Directions here. Drive out West as if you were heading for Woodhill but keep going, head through Parakai and we’ll meet at 45 Slater Rd.

Ride Leader: Tad Mejdr

May 25th – Muriwai

Easy

Before derailleurs were Singlespeeds; before Woodhill Bike Park were the club & d.i.y mountain bike trails at Muriwai.

Come for a cruisy Sunday ride, perfect for singlespeeder warm-up before June’s Single Speed Sunday.
OK, gears are totally welcome too.

Meet at Muriwai tennis courts carpark on Coast Road, Sunday 25th, 9.30am.

Couple of hours free-riding in the pine forest, along the surf beach, stream crossings, pump track, cattle tracks. See if we cant find any of the old-skool grade 3 d/h trails. Any original trail builders are very welcome to come along and show us those ol’ gems. Cafe stop afterwards.

No need to book in, but watch the club facebook in case of any weather postponement;

September 27th – Ambury Farm/Manukau Coastal Walkway

EasyDescribed by the Kennett Bros as “a great little ride”, the walkway follows the coast of the Manukau Harbour, starting at Ambury Regional Park, and ending 7km later on a secluded beach with stunning views out to the heads. We’ll stop for a chinwag and some lollies then head back the way we came.

Because the track follows the coastline it’s almost entirely flat, which makes it perfect for younger children (suitable for kids under 12, see our policy on parental supervision), pull-along trailers and less experienced riders. For the more skilled, it’s a pleasant hour or two taking in the sea air and the views. 🙂

Meet at Ambury Regional Park at 8:45am, ride starts at 9am.

Ride Leader: Peter Stoneham

Sunday 17 April 2016 –  Langs Beach up into the Brynderwyns

Join committee members Alex and Sarah for a ride up into the Brynderwyns. The ride will be predominantly gravel roads with an approximately 5km section of singletrack at the end which forms part of the Te Araroa Walkway. There is a longer option of about 50km, or a shorter option of about 25km. Both rides will feature long climbs (bring your legs) but worth it for the excellent views over Bream Bay to the Whangarei Heads. Don’t forget to pack your togs for a swim afterwards, and Alex and Sarah have kindly offered to host a BBQ at their family batch a few hundred metres up the road so bring something to throw on the barbie.

When and Where: Meet at 10am sharp at the carpark at the southern end of Langs Beach (just past the intersection of Cove Rd and Hector Lang Drive).
Ride Leaders: Alex Cull and Sarah Gilkinson
RSVP: Secretary@aucklandMtB.co.nz
