As part of Auckland Council’s commitment to improving MTB facilities in the regional parks, they are about to start work on a track network at Atiu Creek. To kick this off they’re holding a site meeting this Sunday (17th July). If you’re keen to help and have a say in how this new facility develops, get in touch with Jeannie (email below). There will be no better opportunity to get involved.
Email from Jeannie.Galavazi@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz:
This Sunday Rob, Kevin and I are holding a site meeting at Atiu Creek Regional Park to brainstorm ideas of the best way to plan for the track network at Atiu Creek. A few of you have already indicated that you will be there to lend your expertise and be part of a core working group that will be involved in the concept planning.
Sunday will be the beginning of the planning phase for the track network. Following this we propose to hold a working bee weekend in August where we can fully map out tracks and zones, and decide on track building methodology etc.
So, if you’re interested in being part of this process and you’re available, we’ll be meeting on site at 9.30am this Sunday. We’ll do a drive and walk over of the areas available for mountain biking, then sit down to discuss ideas on the best way to develop the tracks (ie: staging of areas, best use of resources, downhill vs x-country, skill levels, how to attract volunteers to working bees). For those that want to and if we have time, we can then head back out to begin to mark out some routes or areas.
While we would love to start track building straight away, we need to get the track concepts signed off by management before we start building it and committing resources.
Please reply to this email if you’ll be coming along on Sunday so we know to look out for you and how many we should provide morning tea and snacks for.
The link below provides some info about the park and directions on how to get there.
We will meet at the main arrival area near the public toilets (entry off Run Road).
