Just a quick post on a great little event in the South Island at the weekend where I was one of only two North Islanders that made the trip down.
Yours truly here headed to Chch Friday and then onto Timaru on Saturday morning to take part in the Alpine Energy – Timaru 12 hour event as a team of 4. Racing as the (Silver medal winning) Aluminium Allstars from the Day Night Thriller, we had no idea what to expect – sure a smaller event, but that meant fewer categories and tougher competition in each class. The 8.5km course was great fun. A challenge with techy bits not seen in the Day Nighter. I had a shocker; 7 mins into my first lap and met with a tree at high speed. No broken bones but man it hurt and I’m still struggling to use my left arm. My second lap I hit the deck and hurt my knee, then puntures on each of my next two laps!! I’ve never had such a crazy race. Thankfully my team mates Kurt, Damien and Neil rode strongly and we pulled ahead of fourth to clinch the Bronze medal in the Open Men category by a couple of laps. The Silver and Gold were taken by shop teams that were stunningly quick. Well done.
A great event, really fun atmosphere and worth a trip down. The only two North Islanders were in our team and it would be great to have a couple of club teams here next year. Great fun.
The Naseby 12 hour is on in April and we’re considering taking that on too. Naseby has a growing network of great trails and well worth a visit.
