Jafakids at 2010 NZ MTB Champs

The 2010 NZ MTB Champs were held in Wellington from Friday to Sunday, February 26-28. Jafakids, and others, competed in the XC and DH events with some very impressive results. The XC event was held on Saturday in brilliantly fine and warm conditions. First up in the morning were the U15 Men & Women, U17 Men & Women and the Senior Men & Women. Results… Martyn Pearce 7th in Master 3 Men. Sammy Lane 3rd in U17W. Kurt Standen 4th U15M, Peter Bethell 5th U15M, Tom Coombes 6th U15M.

Afternoon racing saw the U19 Men & Women and the Elite Men & Women. Results… Ian Burgess 12th U19M, Locky McArthur 5th. Adrian Retief came 10th in the Elite Men’s race; and in the Elite Women’s race Adrienne Hooper pushed her way through to 6th and Sasha Smith 10th.

Sympathies to Tom Fox who crashed in practice on Thursday breaking his wrist and was unable to compete on Saturday.

Big thanks to Sadie who came to Wellington to support her Jafakids, taking them on training rides on Thursday and Friday; giving them pre-race advice and yelling encouragement through the difficult parts of the course. Not forgetting, of course, the parents who were on the course giving support. Good to see the senior riders come to support the juniors in the morning and the juniors and parents stay on to watch the seniors race in the afternoon.

And, once again, it’s always good to see the Jafakids stay for prizegiving and cheering the winners, even though they may not be on the podium.

The DH races were held on Sunday with a good number of Auckland riders competing. Sam Baker 3rd in U19M, Rogan Young 28th U19M. Zach Baker 5th U17M, Kurt Summerfield 10th U17M, Campbell Mercer 24th U17M. And in the Open Women category… Charlotte Clouston 1st Open Women, Sophiemarie Bethell 2nd Open Women, Sophie Tyas 4th Open Women – (they would have been placed 2nd, 3rd & 5th in Elite Women).
